A Beginner's Guide to Your First Boxing Class

Coach Stuart February 22, 2026 6 min read

Nervous about walking into a boxing gym for the first time? Don't be. Here's exactly what to expect, what to bring, and how to make the most of your first session.

First Things First: Everyone Starts Somewhere

Walking into a boxing gym for the first time can feel intimidating. We get it. You might picture intense sparring, people who've been training for years, and wonder whether you'll fit in. But here's the truth: every single boxer — from weekend warriors to world champions — had a first day where they didn't know a jab from a cross.

At Lions Boxing, beginners are not just welcome — they're who we love to work with. Seeing someone discover what they're capable of in those first few classes is one of the most rewarding parts of coaching. So take a breath, and let's walk through what your first class actually looks like.

What to Bring

You don't need much to get started. For your first class, bring:

- Comfortable athletic clothing you can move freely in - Clean indoor running shoes or cross-trainers - A water bottle (you'll need it) - A small towel - Hand wraps if you have them (we can lend you a pair if not)

That's it. You don't need gloves for your first session — we have loaners available. As you continue training, you'll want to invest in your own gloves and hand wraps, but there's no rush.

What a Typical Beginner Class Looks Like

Our beginner classes follow a structured format designed to teach fundamentals while giving you an incredible workout:

Warm-Up (10-15 minutes): Jump rope, dynamic stretching, footwork drills. This gets your heart rate up and your muscles ready to work.

Technique (15-20 minutes): This is where we break down the basics — your boxing stance, how to throw a proper jab, cross, hook, and uppercut. Coaches demonstrate each technique and then work with you one-on-one to make sure your form is solid.

Bag Work or Partner Drills (15-20 minutes): You'll put what you've learned into practice on the heavy bags or with a partner holding pads. This is where it all comes together and where you'll really start to feel the workout.

Conditioning (5-10 minutes): We finish with bodyweight exercises and core work to build the strength and endurance that supports your boxing.

Cool-Down (5 minutes): Stretching and recovery to bring your heart rate down.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your First Class

Focus on form, not power. The biggest mistake beginners make is trying to punch as hard as they can. Power comes from technique, and technique takes time. Concentrate on doing each movement correctly and the power will follow.

Don't compare yourself to others. The person next to you throwing crisp combinations was once exactly where you are. Everyone progresses at their own pace.

Communicate with your coach. If something doesn't feel right, if you need a break, or if you have questions — speak up. Our coaches are here to help you succeed.

Have fun. Seriously. Boxing is one of the most enjoyable forms of exercise out there. Embrace the challenge, laugh when you stumble, and celebrate when something clicks.
